The focus of this week’s Roundup is content marketing. What is content marketing, you ask? The foundational idea behind it is that if you produce and publish content — an article, a blog post, a video, a whitepaper, a Tweet, or content of any other kind — that’s valuable to people, it will draw them into your website, increase brand visibility, and drive sales. Blogging is perhaps the best example of a vehicle for content marketing, but video sites like YouTube, presentation-sharing platforms like Slideshare, and social media have become increasingly valuable content marketing channels. Content marketing tends to be cheaper than traditional marketing approaches and also creates prospects who are (so goes the theory) more likely to become customers since they sought out the content you published.

It seems simple enough, but how can you as a small business owner or service provider practice content marketing yourself? And how do you come up with content that’s going to get people’s attention and be valuable to them? The articles below address these questions and others around content marketing. There’s a basic introduction to the topic, an article about setting content marketing goals, a blog post about “Hemingway-esque” content marketing, and finally a practical, straightforward set of 20 content marketing suggestions that any business owner should find useful. Taken together, they provide a good foundation to understanding the why and how of content marketing.

Content Marketing 101: How to Build Your Business With Content
Copyblogger Senior Editor Sonia Sloane lays it out in a clear and concise article, with links to even more useful how-to articles about different aspects of content marketing.

10 Content Marketing Goals Worth Pursuing
Another Sonia Sloane piece, this one about setting content marketing goals. As with any business endeavor, it’s essential to know why you’re doing it and what you want to get out of it. As Sloane writes, “Content all by itself — even terrific content — is just content… It won’t transform your business or get you where you need to go, until you add one thing… Content marketing is a meaningless exercise without business goals.” True true.

The Hemingway Guide to Content Marketing
A useful, literary-minded blog post from Jesse Noyes at Eloqua that uses the example of Ernest Hemingway to show how you should approach content marketing. Even more than the tips that Noyes offers, the post in itself is a good example of content marketing. It’s original, has an angle, and is more engaging than a typical marketing how-to article.

20 Content Marketing Ideas for 2012
So you’ve got a sense of how to practice content marketing, but how do you actually come up with good content? Lisa Barone of Small Business Trends provides 20 ideas to get you started.

What’s been your experience with content marketing? Has it impacted your business, or do you feel like it’s a waste of time? And what challenges have you had with it? Feel free to leave your comments.

When we launched vSites last summer, we included 120 different theme options with it, giving users a huge set of choices in the look of their website. I’m excited to announce that we introduced our first set of 14 new themes this week, bringing the total number of theme options to a whopping 134. The new themes, while having different color palates, textures, and site menu placement (not to mention splash images), all share a clean, streamlined look and feel that should appeal to many site creators.

One nice touch of all the new themes is the shadow effect below the splash image, which provides depth and movement to the page.

Keep in mind that you can switch your site theme and edit your theme to make your site look just how you want it to. We’ve seen a lot of great sites now in which the site creators have used the theme editing capabilities to give their sites a totally unique look!

Greetings, dear readers! For this week’s Marketing <del datetime="2012-01-31T21:08:45+00:00">Monday</del> Tuesday Roundup, we’re focusing on Twitter. For marketing purposes, Twitter is simultaneously the simplest and most challenging of the social networks, and I’m always impressed when I find people who are using Twitter in new and effective ways. The articles and posts this week include a basic how-to guide for marketing on Twitter, an interview with “Phoenix Real Estate Guy” Jay Thompson about how he uses Twitter, a post about the virtues of the tweet scheduling app Buffer, and an article about McDonald’s ill-conceived #McDStories campaign and what companies can learn from it. I hope they provide food for Twitter thought and spur some ideas for your own Twitter use.

How to Use Twitter for Marketing & PR
I almost skipped this post because of the undeniably bland title, and I’m glad I didn’t. This is an enormously useful article from Hubspot Chief Marketing Officer Mike Volpe. He offers several good, fresh ideas, such as getting your CEO tweeting and connecting with customers that way, as well as a straightforward set of steps for getting started on Twitter.

How Does “Phoenix Real Estate Guy” Attract Clients On Twitter?
If you’re not familiar with Jay Thompson, you should be. The self-labeled “Phoenix Real Estate Guy” uses Twitter really, really well (he’s got 11,636 followers!) and has become well-known in both the real estate and social media marketing worlds for his social media savvy. He also writes a great blog that I recommend you subscribe to. Anyway, social media scheduling app Garious did this post on their blog about Jay and how he’s used Twitter to build his client base. The anecdote he provides is one of the best uses Twitter I’ve come across.

How and Why I Use Buffer
John Jantsch of the small business marketing blog Duct Tape Marketing makes the case for Buffer, a service that lets people schedule tweets and Facebook posts. He goes into detail about how he uses Buffer, which I appreciated.

Why McDonald’s should have known better
With a single hashtag — #McDStories — McDonald’s provided the world with a helpful case study of the potential pitfalls when a company asks people on Twitter, “So, what do you think of us?” Forbes‘s Shelley DuBois gives an intelligent and entertaining analysis of the McDonald’s blunder.

Have your own insights about Twitter? Let us know by posting a comment.

Happy Monday! I’m excited to start the week by announcing an awesome set of new features, enhancements, and bug fixes from Friday’s release. Here are the standouts:

1. New easy-to-crop Splash Image Module
We’ve made it super easy to crop and customize the splash images on your site. With the new Splash Image Module, you can upload an image and easily drag and reposition the photo right in the Site Editor. This should be a big timesaver for many vSites users because you no longer have to use another application to crop the image or worry about the splash image taking up your entire page. Just another way that vSites makes it easy to build a website.

To utilize the new cropping capabilities, just select “Splash Image” on the Add Module screen, then upload the image you want to use.

2. Two new listings modules and a new slideshow layout
If you enjoyed the ease of the Listings Module before, you’ll love it even more now. With the new Featured Listing Module, you can showcase one specific property on your site; if you would like to show off all of your listings, you can create a Mini Listings Module in which site visitors can easily click through to all of your listings, similar to a vFlyer listing widget. Both modules are fully customizable, easy to add, and seamlessly integrate into your site.

Additionally, we now offer a slideshow layout for the Listings Module that rotates through the first photo of each of your flyers.

3. An alternative to vFlyer’s Facebook app
By the request of our users, we have come up with an alternative to the vFlyer Facebook app, which is currently not compatible with Facebook’s format. We hope to have the app working again soon but in the meantime, this alternative allows users to display their listings on their Facebook Page. Stay tuned for a step-by-step instruction manual but if you want to learn about the workaround, give our support team a call at 800-594-5930 ext. 1 or email us at support@vflyer.com.

4. Other Enhancements and Bug Fixes
We pushed a number of other enhancements and bug fixes to the system:

An issue with the iPad slideshow is now fixed and the slideshow now works as expected.

Previously, if a vMarketing user chose the Standard print layout, the logo would not appear in the PDF. This issue is now fixed.

In vSites, when clicking through the photo gallery a pop-up slideshow will now display photos that are selected. We hope you enjoy the new features and capabilities in vSites and vMarketing. If you have any comments or questions, please let us know.

Lastly, stay tuned for some new vSites themes in the coming weeks. I took a quick peek at some of the work our designers have been doing and it looks great!

For this week’s Roundup, we’re focusing on real estate, with articles about a new iPad “non-app,” the complicated dynamic between a broker’s brand and its agents’ individual brands, and using Pinterest as a link building tool. And we had to throw in one article related to the defeat last week of the SOPA and PIPA bills. Of course, “defeat” might be too strong a word — the bills were simply tabled — but that they were tabled because of massive grassroots pressure gives us at vFlyer a great “power to the people” feeling.

M Squared Introduces App-less iPad Open House Management
Washington, D.C., real estate brokerage M Squared announced last week its introduction of a new iPad-based software for collecting buyer information at open houses. The proprietary software lets open house visitors leave their email addresses and then get automatic email updates about the property they visited as well as nearby comparables and upcoming open houses. I would guess that the “cool factor” of its being an iPad app (well, not really an app, but who’s counting?) and its simplicity will increase the likelihood of buyers leaving their information on it, thus increasing the likelihood of a conversion from an open house. I suspect that other brokerages and real estate technology companies will follow M Squared’s lead.

Brand IS Important, So Who’s Brand Should YOU Be Building?
What a thoughtful, enlightening piece from InmanNext contributor Teri Conrad on the gap between broker brand and agent brand. She raises some really interesting questions and I also love the way she incorporates Twitter and video right into the post.

Real Estate Link Building with Pinterest
At vFlyer, we’re paying more attention these days to social sharing site Pinterest, which allows users to post content (pictures, mainly) to a “pinboard” and share it with everyone else. Sound familiar? It takes the fundamental concept of every social networking site — sharing — but it presents it with a new interface and tone: softer, prettier, more visual. It’s no surprise that women comprise a majority of the site’s users so far. In any case, this is a good piece from the Real Estate Marketing Blog about how real estate agents can use Pinterest to build up links to their website. It’s tough to gauge the SEO juice in a Pinterest link, but this article does make a good case for the value of it.

#BlackoutSOPA: How 87,000 People Taught Us About The Future of Online Activism
A fascinating account on Techcrunch from the founder of #BlackoutSOPA of how in less than two weeks, an organization that did just one very simple thing — replace people’s Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ profile photos with a “Stop SOPA” image — gained 87,000 users and national attention. A reminder that it’s often the simplest ideas that, when executed well, have the widest appeal.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day to all of you! For those of you who have the day off, I hope you’re taking the opportunity to give back to your community in some way, big or small, as service has rightly become the focus of this holiday. And for those of you (like me) who are working today, I hope you pause for a moment and reflect on the man being honored today and the message he conveyed.

I found an interesting article in the Christian Science Monitor this afternoon about how kids increasingly don’t know much about King (aside from the fact that they get to miss a day of school because of him). I’ve certainly come to take King’s struggles and achievements for granted, and this piece made me stop and really consider why today is a national holiday.

That, of course, is unrelated to the Marketing Monday Roundup, for which we’ve compiled several other interesting articles about technology, social media, and online marketing. Here are the winners this week:

Why Social Is So Disruptive to Traditional Marketing
I appreciate Judy Shapiro’s piece in Social Media Today because she helpfully articulates the shift from a content distribution platform to a community distribution platform. She also serves as a model of a marketing industry veteran who’s adapted to the new landscape (or rather, is adapting) and is embracing new ideas about what marketing is in the social web.

Carrie Hill’s post on Search Engine Land is specific to using Google Analytics and AdWords to measure marketing success — which is useful in and of itself — but I also like her opening point about the need to justify marketing expenses and why it’s essential to have clear metrics to measure your success.

We’re accustomed to a rather limited set of top-level domains: .com, .net, etc. We’re now seeing the expansion of TLDs to the point that someone could conceivably own “.beaches” and license the subdomains of it (for instance, “spain.beaches”) to others. This insightful column in The Economist nicely contextualizes this development.

Not exactly a triumphant story about small businesses rising above the online retailing behemoths, but an encouraging New York Times piece nonetheless for small and mid-sized retailers.

We introduced some exciting new features to vMarketing and vSites last night that will help users further promote listings through social media and integrate them into their websites. We also fixed several bugs. Here’s a rundown of the biggest changes:

1. New social sharing feature on flyers
By default, flyers now have a Share tab on the right that, when moused over, lets people like, tweet, and +1 your flyers with a single click. The new feature means that promoting your flyers is no longer up to you alone; now anyone can share a flyer with the Facebook friends, Twitter followers, and Google+ circles. This is the essence of social media: providing the tools to share content and make connections to a wide and diverse audience.

The social sharing feature is a good complement to the existing social media toolbar, which lets you integrate your social networks into your flyers.

2. Listing integration in vSites now easier through WYSIWYG Editor
The vSites WYSIWYG (or Freeform) Editor gives you free reign to make your website content look exactly how you want it to. Now it’s even easier to pull your flyer content into it. When you add a text or image link to the WYSIWYG Editor, there’s now an option to link to any of your published flyers. From the “Link Type” drop-down menu, select “Listings” and then choose the flyer you want to link to.

3. Bug fixes
We resolved the following bugs in our system:

In the Site Wizard, if all site pages are selected, you can now complete the site creation process. The system was preventing this from happening before.

If the default page of a site is deleted, now a new default page is selected and you can access the Site Editor.

If an account has a domain credit, now both the option to use the domain credit and configure an existing domain name are displayed.

An issue with the site map for sites that use a vsites.com subdomain is now fixed.

Also, we added a new pricing page for custom design and copywriting services. If you’re interested in having our team help you with the design or content on your website, let us know.

Today’s post is a little later than usual. The reason? I’m in vFlyer’s San Francisco office this week and thus 3 hours behind my typical East Coast schedule. But hey, you can enjoy today’s Roundup for some evening reading. And without further ado, here’s this week’s crop of interesting stories related to marketing, technology, and social media:

Circle Up: How Brands Are Using Google+
Google+ is on a lot of people’s minds these days. Still, most of us don’t have the slightest idea how to use it, especially as a business. Mashable contributor Lauren Hockenson offers good insights, three straightforward tips, and a useful slideshow of 10 brands that are using Google+ well. While no one is sure if Google+ will catch on with a critical mass of people to really rival Facebook, there’s enough attention being paid to it that it’s worth it for any business to start a Google+ page.

Old services meet new media: a tweeting cabbie’s growing business
I love this article by Jacqui Cheng for Ars Technica about a Chicago cabdriver who has built a brand for himself using Twitter, Google Latitudes, and other location-based apps. A great anecdote about the creative uses of these tools.

Who cares how many email addresses your dealership collects
This one is a few months old but it was featured in DealerRefresh’s “Best of 2011″ post last week. Regardless of when it was posted, it’s a good, short piece about common pitfalls in building up a mailing list and using (or not using) it to drive sales and build relationships with prospective customers. A useful article not just for auto dealers but anyone who deals with customers on a regular basis.

Five Easy Steps to Simple Camera Mastery
Good photos are the key to a successful flyer. If you fill your flyer with clear, well-lit, well-composed photos, you’re bound to get more calls from it than you would it your photos were dark and grainy. This article from the New York Times offers 5 basic tips for the amateur photographer to take better pictures on your digital camera.

I hope you enjoy these articles as much as I have. If you have thoughts about any of them, feel free to leave your comments.

Maybe it’s just a feeling of rejuvenation that I get with each new year, but I have a hunch that 2012 will be a year of thinking big and taking risks for many individuals and businesses. The economy is still a big concern for many–THE big concern, rather–but we’re well past 2008. It seems that people are spending less time worrying about the bleak economic landscape and more time finding the opportunities that the recession and nascent recovery have produced. Businesses large and small are embracing new technologies, new modes of communication with customers, new business models, new directions, and transforming themselves in the process.

And it’s not just in business and tech that I’m seeing this trend. Recently I’ve come across several instances of it across a surprising range of enterprises and disciplines. Here are a few examples that have stood out to me.

ReadWriteWeb reported this week that Philadelphia Media Network, the owner of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News, has launched Project Liberty, a tech startup incubator. They’re beginning with three Philadelphia-area startups, which will share office space in the same building as PMN’s newspapers. Think of it: a newspaper publisher as a startup incubator? It goes against the common storyline of the last decade: the death of big-city newspapers, and their owners’ failure to embrace new technologies or adapt their business models. And yet PMN is bucking the trend, supporting tech startups that may or may not become successful ventures for them. And if they do succeed, their products may have little to do with PMN’s core business. But in any case, Project Liberty has people using the words “newspaper” and “innovative” in the same sentence again, and I hope that other publishers follow PMN’s lead.

In the realm of politics, Americans Elect created a good deal of buzz last year with its novel approach to nominating a presidential candidate: enabling voters to register as delegates online, then cast votes (regardless of party affiliation) in successive rounds–again online–for the nominee. Not only that, but to promote bipartisanship, the nominee for vice president must be from a different party than the presidential candidate. AE has already qualified as a party in 13 states and will likely appear on this year’s ballot in more, so it’s likely that the organization will have an impact on the election. While Washington Post columnist Elizabeth Marcus, for one, raises good questions about AE’s sources of funding and the possibility of it being “hijacked” by supporters of a particular candidate, I’m still energized by the prospect of adapting an institution that has seemed so un-adaptable (the party nomination process) to the 21st century and giving citizens a greater voice in deciding our candidates.

Education is another area in which, despite good intentions and lots of good ideas, real change has been extremely difficult to achieve. I was intrigued by a recent article by GOOD Education Editor Liz Dwyer about teaching imagination in schools. Specifically, Dwyer writes about two researchers at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette who have launched a project called “Imagination: Creating the Future of Education and Work,” the aim of which is to help educators teach kids creativity and conceptual thinking. Sound wishy washy? It does to me, a little. But when you consider that the world of 2022 will not look like that of 2012, and that today’s students will be entering a job market that we can’t even conceive of, the case for engendering imagination begins to look stronger.

Even in the realm of professional sports, I find the success of the San Francisco 49ers under first-year head coach Jim Harbaugh (captured in an ESPN article by Jeffri Chadiha) to be a good example of the impact of thinking big and taking risks. The Niners have a talented group of players, no doubt, but this could easily have been another losing season for them. Instead, they finished with a 13-3 record and head to the playoffs with a first-round bye and home field advantage. Harbaugh’s success stems largely from the commitment he’s gotten from his players and capitalizing on his team’s strengths, not from designing plays that are particularly creative or risky. But he has to possess a good deal of creativity and gumption to have imagined his team being in the position it’s in now, having finished its first winning season since 2002. The 49ers’ success has been built on hard work, toughness, and precise execution, but it started with Coach Harbaugh imagining a winning 49ers team.

Now, is there really any connection between these stories? Probably not. After all, people have been innovating and looking at their worlds in new ways since, well, people have existed. It’s just that I’m seeing more cases of out-of-the-box thinking and risk-taking now than I’ve ever seen before. Perhaps people’s skins have thickened a bit from the recession. Perhaps we’ve become more critical of the status quo, more focused on what’s really important, less complacent, and are thus more open to creative solutions and risk-taking than before. So whether it’s well-founded or not, I’m choosing to embrace this notion that 2012 will be a year of imagination, innovation, and risk-taking.

If we take vFlyer as an example, we expanded our marketing arsenal by launching vSites this past summer–our first major new service offering since 2006–and are committed to making it the best, most user-friendly website builder on the planet. Achieving this goal will take creative solutions to the common problems people face when building and managing a website, and perhaps even changing the way people think about websites in general. We don’t yet know what this will look like, but this is the direction we’re going in in 2012 and we’re excited to see what we come up with.

So this year, whatever industry or field you’re in, think big. Take risks. Imagine. And then act. You’ll come out stronger and more successful than you would have if you just kept doing the same old thing. If you have thoughts about what 2012 holds in store, or about imagination, creativity, and risk-taking in general, by all means share them!

A new year is a good time to try something new. At the vFlyer Blog, our new adventure for 2012 is the “Marketing Monday Roundup”, an aggregation of interesting articles, blog posts, and other content related to online marketing, social media, branding, and technology (and really anything we find on the Web that makes us think, ask questions, laugh, smile, etc.). And since our office was closed yesterday (Monday), the first Roundup comes on a Tuesday. But who’s counting?

4 Ways Small Business Websites Can Drive More Sales
A Mashable piece by vFlyer CEO Aaron Sperling on how businesses can better utilize their websites to drive sales. Read this article! It’s direct and practical, just like Aaron.

Breaking Down Clicks Per Connection On Facebook, Google+ and Twitter
A great post by Inman News Chief Evangelist Chris Smith about an experiment he did to find out where the content he was posting was generating the most engagement. More interesting to me than the results is the method by which he set out to quantify the relative engagement of his readers and followers.

3 Marketing Things We Do Wrong That We Could Easily Do Right
A short, succinct, and useful post on three common marketing mistakes and how to avoid them.

Top 5 Trends for Search & Social Media Marketing in 2012
The obligatory “2012 predictions” piece, but valuable nonetheless. Not surprisingly, mobile and social are the focus.

Unboxed: Even a Giant Can Learn to Run
New York Times profile of outgoing IBM CEO Samuel J. Palmisano and a short history of how he led the company’s remarkable rebound. I think the first of his four questions should be at the top of any business owner’s or professional’s list.

Microsoft Celebrates The Demise Of IE6 In The US
Finishing off this week’s Roundup is this TechCrunch article on how Microsoft is embracing the death of Internet Explorer 6, which clings to a 1% share of the browser market. Is this the other 1%?

I hope you enjoyed the Marketing Monday (Tuesday) Roundup this week. If you have any thoughts on the items posted, leave a comment!
